Shot Golden Eagle found in the Central Balkan National Park, Klisura Park Section, Vartopa site once again

Spontaneous protests of citizens in support of the Strandja Nature Park
Absolutely spontaneous protests of citizens started after the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court to declare the Order for designation of the Strandja Nature Park void on June 29th. For a first time people went out on the streets not being organized by any ecological organization to show the institutions that they have crossed all borders violating the Bulgarian nature heritage as well as their civic rights. more>
Training for analyzing the bat sounds
On December 1st in the office of GREEN BALKANS – Stara Zagora volunteers have been trained how to analyze the sounds of bats. The training is part of project “Monitoring of bat diversity: Indicators for sustainable development in Eastern Europe”. more>

Today, the three-member chamber of the Supreme Administrative Court pronounced their decision on the complaint of Tsarevo Municipality and investors against the Order for the designation of Strandja Nature Park issued in 1995. more>

CEEWEB Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting of CEEWEB (Central and East European Working Group for the Enhancement of Biodiversity) was held in the period November 14th-18th, 2007. CEEWEB is an international network of almost 80 non-governmental organizations in Central and Eastern Europe, as Green Balkans was one of its founders. The mission of CEEWEB’ is conservation of biodiversity through encouragement and promotion of sustainable development. more>
The Green Balkan’s office was notified of a possible mass poisoning near Stara Zagora.
On November 8th, the Green Balkan’s office was notified of a possible mass poisoning of starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) near Stara Zagora. Soon after being notified, our team traveled to the area, and along with the local authorities, including the mayor, we examined the area. more>
“NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria – Goals, Opportunities, and Challenges”
Seminar entitled “NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria – goals, opportunities, and challenges” was held on October 30th, 2007 in Plovdiv. The event was organized by Green Balkans Federation of Nature Conservation NGOs and “Central Balkan” National Park Directorate. The seminar was attended by some 60 representatives of various organizations and associations of land and forest owners, including 15 forestry associations from the Western Rhodope region, sector organizations related to land and forest management, etc. more>

Juvenile Imperial Eagle tagged with a GPS transmitter released back into the wild
On October 29th, 2007, near Jrebino village, Green Balkans released a juvenile Imperial Eagle back into the wild (Aquila heliaca). The birds’ adaptation and first attempts at independent living in its natural environment will be subject to constant few days’ monitoring. The team hopes that the bird will manage to adapt to the new living conditions. more>
A young Griffon vulture entered the Wildlife Rescue Centre at Green Balkans
A young Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) entered the Wildlife Rescue Centre at Green Balkans for treatment on October 22nd 2007. The bird was received with the kind collaboration of the Director of the Tundja Game-Breeding Station and after a signal sent by our colleagues from the Nature Conservation Centre “Eastern Rhodopes”. more>
Public campaigns for Rila and Irakli
Series of processions and meetings were held all over the country on October 19th in support of the Rila Mountains and the Irakli beach and against the wave of reckless investment intentions and illegal constructions (http://forthenature.org/cases/). Green Balkans supported some of them. more>

New Friends of the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center
On the 16th of October the Rehabilitation Center was visited by 100 children from “Little Prince” kindergarten in Plovdiv. more>
Informational campaign on NATURA 2000
A team of Green Balkans visited more than 70 settlements in 23 municipalities in the Eastern Balkan Mountains, the Rhodopi Mountains and the Sakar Mountains within three five-day expeditions in the period 17.09-12.10.2007. more>
Griffon Vulture found dead in the Eastern Rhodopes
On October 1st, a man living in the area of Pokrovan village, Ivaylovgrad Municipality, sent a signal about a dead bird. That very day, Green Balkans’ team and representatives of the State Forestry Department in Ivaylovgrad visited the site. more>

Releasing Birds in the Kupena Reserve Territory
On September 13th, 2007, with the support of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters in Pazardjik, two patients from the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center (WRBC) were released back into the wild. more>
Egyptian Vultures in Green Balkans Rescues Centre
On the 18th of August, the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center received two Egyptian Vultures. more>
The Tundja Gorge is already a Protected Area
The picturesque area is located in the land of the villages of Radovets and Lessovo and comprises a total area of 19 000 ha. The unique biodiversity it was designated for includes over 150 bird species, 8 amphibian species, 21 reptilian species and other protected and rare flora and fauna species. Among these are Otter, Leopard snake, Eagle owl, Great crested newt, Four-lined snake, Montpellier snake, Yellow fire-bellied toad, etc. more>
The Orders for designation of Protected Areas not subjected to appeal. Strandja remains a Nature Park
This has finally become reality after the Parliament approved the amendments of the Protected Areas Act on July 19th. The bill was submitted by the “To Let Nature Remains in Bulgaria” NGO Coalition and provides for ban on the subjecting to appeal any orders, decrees, and other administrative acts for designation of Protected Areas issues by June 30th 2007. more>
First written warning sent by the EC to Bulgaria with regard to NATURA 2000
The European Commission is sending Bulgaria a first written warning in two separate cases over its failure to properly transpose EU environmental laws into its national legislation. The first case concerns the directive on the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora and the second the directive on the conservation of wild birds. These two directives form the core of EU policy on nature and biodiversity. more>
An official complaint sent to the EC for failure to comply with the engagements on NATURA 2000
On June 9th 2007, 7 organizations – Green Balkans Federation, BALKANI Wildlife Society, WWF Danube – Carpathian Programme Bulgaria, Centre for Environmental Information and Education, Bulgarian Society on Phytosociology, Haberlea Environmental Society – Asenovgrad and Environmental Club of University of Sofia submitted an official complaint in the European Commission against the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Environment and Waters for failure of the Bulgarian government to implement Directive 92/43/EEC in terms of submission of drastically incomplete list of proposed sites of Community Importance. The problem is that despite the list of potential Protected Zones, covering 33,4 % of the area of the country submitted to the National Council on Biodiversity, barely 19 % were approved and submitted to the EC. more>
