A New Year – a new egg!

A New Year – a new egg!

02.01.2018
The very first hours of 2018 have brought a great joy to the team of Green Balkans with the laying of the first egg!
The start of the 2018 breeding season at the Rescue Centre was traditionally given by the pair of Bearded Vultures.

Having observed a number of copulations since December, we were happily surprised with an egg in the first day of the new year.

Since the start of the breeding activity of the two birds in 2016, the female has been laying two eggs every year. We hope she would do that again this year and we are eagerly waiting for the outcome.

We would like to remind you that the species has been considered extinct from Bulgaria since more than 60 years and this is the only pair breeding in our country.

Two years in a row the birds were successful, the very first time they bred they hatched and reared two chicks, while the second year only a single chick hatched and survived. Our vultures are a part of the Endangered Species Programme (EEP) of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), coordinated by the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF).

So, the countdown has begun. We believe that with this start, we will have a successful new year! And we wish for loads of health for our team, our patients, our friends and followers, as well as everyone else!
