The meeting was organized and hosted by Regional Nature Park «Molentargius - Saline» and all other project partners participated: Regional Nature Park “Parco del Delta del Po – Emilia Romagna” (Italy), Green Balkans NGO (Bulgaria), Regional Nature Park “Camargue” (France), Biological Station “Tour du Valat” (France) and CSME of Salins Group (France).

The main project goal is conservation and achievement of favouravle conservation status in 10 protected sites from the pan-European ecological network Natura 2000 situated in Italy, France and Bulgaria. Habitat types subject to conservation measure within the project include 1150* Coastal lagoon; 1310 Salicornia and other annuals colonizing mud and sand; 1410 Mediterranean salt meadows (Juncetalia maritimi); 1510* Mediterranean salt steppes (Limonietalia) and others. Target bird species are: Ferroginous duck (Aythya nyroca); Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus); Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus); Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus); Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta); Little, Common and Sandwich terns (Sterna albifrons, Sterna hirundo, Sterna sandvicensis); Shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) etc. Secondary objectives are: the elaboration of a management model for salt works; the elaboration of Guidelines for Larus michahellis disturbance mitigation; the improvement of the touristic fruition and the reduction of potential disturbance induced; the elaboration and approval of the management plan for IT4070007 SCI “Salina di Cervia”.

At the workshop each partner presented the activities planned for each site for achievement of the above goals and objectives. A technical meeting for all partners on issues related to overall management, technical and financial issues of the LIFE+ project was held. The hosts from Regional Nature Park «Molentargius - Saline» presented their plans for restoration of hydraulic circulation in the lagoon aiming at improvement of the ecological state that is currently deteriorated. To achieve that a new canal for inflow of sea water will be created and the inner dikes will be restored to guarantee a salinity gradient of the water. The park is home for 2000 breeding pairs of Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) as well as many other species protected by the EU Birds Directive. To improve conditions for their nesting islets will be built.

The Green Balkans NGO activities will be directed towards implementation of activities from the developed “Integrated Management Plan of Pomorie Lake” aiming at improvement of nesting conditions of threatened bird species and mitigation of threats for the dune habitats and specific flora caused by invasive plants species Amorpha fruticosa, Spartium junceu, etc.

Duration of the project is from 1 October 2011 to 31 March 2016.
Total costs of the project are 4 949 869 euro, and EC co-financing amounts to 2 395 663 euro.
