On May 11, the team of “Bright future for the Black vulture” project LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 will receive the first for the country transfer of Black vultures. The birds are provided by the Spanish organizations VCF and GOBEX and are part of the long-term program for reintoduction of the species in Bulgaria. The juvenile birds have been chicks in distress, which have left their nests in Spain earlier and have been rescued and rehabilitated by our Spanish colleagues. After thorough  monitoring of the condition of the wild population of the species an international team has defined what part of the birds could be sent to Bulgaria, where they will support the reintroduction into the wild nature of this species – currently extinct from our country.

After the arrival of the species in Bulgaria, the birds will be quarantined in the Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center in Stara Zagora after that it will be sent to the adaptation aviaries and Kotel and Vratsa.

After about 15 years of work of Green balkan, FWFF and the Society of protection of birds of prey in these two regions the nesting population of Griffon vultures has been recovered. The reintroduction of the more rare Black vulture is the next step and the ultimate aim of the environmentalists is the return of the Bearded vulture – symbol of the nature conservation in Bulgaria.
Additional information about the birds will be presented by the team soon.
