Observations of the vultures, tagged in “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park

18.12.2017
As we have already informed you, in October and November 2017, 5 juvenile Griffon vultures in “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park were tagged, all of them hatched in the wild. Very soon after that the first data for observations of some of the marked birds were reported.

By data of our colleagues from the Society for Protection of Birds of Prey, a Griffon vulture with wing tag A3 was reported on November 29th 2017 and on December 14th 2017 in Eastern Rhodope mountains in the region of Studen kladenets dam and a Griffon vulture with wing tag A0 was observed on December 1st 2017 on the feeding site near the village of Potochnitsa. A Griffon vulture with wing tag P is also tagged with a transmitter and the data received showes that from November 20th 2017 until November 21th 2017 it have made a flight of over 300 km southwest from “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park and settled in “Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli” Forest National Park in Northern Greece. There the bird was captured on November 24 2017 by our Greek colleagues who have already had an activity for tagging of vultures in the region. After December 3rd 2017 the Griffon vulture P flied to a near area, this time in Bulgaria, near “Studen kladenets” dam, where the bird is also living now.

The data from the tagged Griffon vultures in “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park shows that they have already flied to the first wintering areas in the southern parts of the Balkan peninsular. We will keep following their migration to determine whether they will remain to winter on the Balkan peninsular or they will fly southword to a region in the Near East and Africa.
