The European Commission announced the finalists of the 2018 European Natura 2000 Award.

Lesser Kestrel Recovery in Bulgaria is a Green Balkans and partners’ initiative which is among the finalist in the Cross-border cooperation and Networking Category.
 
This year in the prestigious Award 75 projects all over EU took part, in following categories: Communication, Socio-economic benefits, Conservation, Reconciling interest/perceptions, Cross-border cooperation and Networking. European Natura 2000 Award aims to promote good practice examples of Natura 2000 management and added value of Natura 2000 to the local economy. Out of all 75 applied projects only 25 reached the final phase. The European Commissioner for the Environment, Fisheries and Maritime affairs Karmenu Vella, together with the high–level Jury members will reveal the winners of the 2018 edition on Ceremony at Brussels on May 17.
 
Efforts of Green Balkans (Bulgaria) and the partners from DEMA (Spain), EuroNatur (Germany), National Park of East Macedonia-Thrace (Greece) and DAYKO (Turkey) which were invested in recovery of Lesser Kestrel as a nesting species in Bulgaria and improving of the population in adjacent countries received high evaluation by the jury of the Award. So, our project reached the final phase of the competition among participants all over the Europe.

In addition to Green Balkans there are 3 more Bulgarian projects, executed by NGOs, among the finalists in the Natura 2000 Award. This is just next acknowledgment of Bulgarian nature conservation NGOs made by European Commission.
