On February 2nd 2018 Hristo Peshev (Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna), Danail Kilarski and Georgi Stoyanov (Birds of Prey Protection Society) marked and released two more Griffon Vultures from the adaptation aviary above the village of Dolno Ozirovo.

One of the birds was very young, hatched last year, and had voluntarily entered the aviary of Dolno Ozirovo 4 days ago. It was marked with wing tags inscribed A5  and a green ring 5B5 and a standard metal ring W0328. The other vulture was an immature, brought by FWFF from Paris Zoo. This bird was tagged with a wing tag on the right wing inscribed C1, partially covered by a special patagial transmitter, which would allow us to follow the behavior and adaptation of the bird into the wild. This vulture also carries a green ring B2M and a standard ring W0323.

You can follow the vultures with transmitters live from here.

In the meantime, the team of BPPS traditionally follows the start of the breeding season of the birds in the area. At the start of the month Georgi Stoyanov carried out some observations in the Northern parts of the Vrachanski Balkan NP. The team of the Vultures Back to LIFE Project is happy to therefore announce that there are two birds already incubating. There are two other suspected nesters but there is no clear visibility towards the nests. Two other pairs were observed copulating and constructing nests. Pairs of Griffon Vultures were located at a total of 9 sites. There are three other suspected nesting sites we are hoping to confirm at a later stage.

Look for our tagged birds among the other vultures in Vrachanski Balkan!
