It has already become a tradition for Green Balkans NGO to support environmental education activities for kids from Dobrich region. Last Saturday it was turn of schoolchildren from Stefan Karadzha Primary School of Zhitnitsa village, municipality of Dobrich.

One day excursion of the schoolchildren included visit of Green Education Centre at Shabla town and two key wetlands of the region – Durankulak Lake and Shablenska tuzla. After initial acquaintance with natural treasures of the region, presented in an attractive way by Green centre’s staff, the group’s first stop was the shore of Shablenska tuzla. Young amateur naturalists and their teachers were prepared with binoculars for the encounter with birds but the chance to look through the telescopes assured by Green Balkans allowed them a close-up look at avifauna including swans, ducks, teals and shelducks. The kids made a short walk on the beach separating the saline lagoon from the Black Sea where society’s expert made a short lecture on the coastal dunes and their specific vegetation. Schoolchildren demonstrated good discipline and showed intense interest to the presented topics.

Last stop of the outdoors trip was the sea coast at Cosmos camping next to Durankulak Lake where we had good view of more birds – grebes, coots and red-breasted mergansers. Obviously, the kids have been listening carefully during their Nature classes and the lecture at the Green centre because they easily distinguished and identified male and female birds.
