Absolutely spontaneous protests of citizens started after the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court to declare the Order for designation of the Strandja Nature Park void on June 29th.
For a first time people went out on the streets not being organized by any ecological organization to show the institutions that they have crossed all borders violating the Bulgarian nature heritage as well as their civic rights.
On July 29th, immediately after the announcement of the decision, about 200 citizens gathered at the Popa square, blocked the traffic for a while and then moved to Pette kiosheta and did the same.
On Monday about 300 citizens gathered again completely spontaneously at Orlov most bridge and blocked the traffic with cardboard signs and calls in support of the Strandja Park. The police arrived and arrested 35 from the protesting people.
The Presidency was chosen as a meeting point on July 4th, but after consultations with the Mayor of Sofia – Boyko Borisov – the meeting place was changed to the garden in front of the National Theater, where about 500 people gathered without any encounters with the police or arrests.
At the same time on July 4th, the Supreme Administrative Prosecutor’s office announced that it has initiated actions for returning the statute of the Strandja Nature Park. Among the motives is stated that the decision of the SAC to repeal the statute of the park is illegal due to significant violations.
Let us remind you that one of the appellants for the cancellation of the park is the “Crash 2000” company, which is currently building the illegal “Zlatnata perla” villa settlement. The construction was ceased by the SAC, as the Prosecutor’s office found out that the company had forged the signature of the Deputy-minister of Environment and Water – Mr. Jordan Dardov to obtain a constriction permit.
At the same time for a second time a session of the court, presided by judge Iconomov decides to cancel a unique protected area, after the order for designation of the “Kamchiyski pyasatsi” NP was also declared void, also due to an appellant who had illegally obtained property within the protected area.
The following question emerges – which are the next protected areas, which will be destroyed for the sake of someone’s private interests and up to what levels of the authorities and the juridical system their influence reaches.
The doubts on the objectivity of judge Iconomov are also supported by facts /published in his tax declaration/ - for example the obtaining of a plot of over 500 sq.m. within the regulation of Kavarna at a price of less than a BGN/sq.m.
The actions in support of the Strandja Park had all great media coverage and we hope that this would assist the favorable solution of the case.
The decision of the SAC will be appealed within the legal deadline – a session of a 5-member-court is expected to finally decide on the case.
