Within the seminar the forests were analyzed as sources of various ecosystem benefits – providing fresh air, a place for rest, recreation and tourism, keeping and cleaning the water, anti-erosive functions, functions for sustaining the biological and genetic diversity etc. Examples were provided, in which the woods were used as a source of economical benefits and the focus was switched from the timber to new and diverse possibilities including ecotourism and benefits of forests rich in water sources.
Some of the lectors showed scientific studies and works, which integrated the goals of NATURA 2000 with the goals of the modern economical sustainable forest management. As an alternative to compensate the loss of the diminished timber in the forest of NATURA 2000, were showed the financial instruments of the EU for support of projects related to the conservation of biodiversity in the forests.
