An adult Golden eagle with a severe fracture of the left wing was found in the eve of the New Year celebrations, on December 30th, thanks to the professional cooperation of the guards and the management of the Central Balkan National Park.
After less than two hours the bird was transported to the Wildlife Rescue Centre of Green Balkans in Stara Zagora for first aid and immediate treatment. The initial examination carried out by the veterinarians of the Centre showed that the future of the eagle was not looking very bright.
Unfortunately this is yet another case of a bird of prey shot after the official opening of the hunting season for small game. Despite the fact that all raptor birds are protected and many of them have limited distribution, hunters still hate them and shoot them all the time. More than 60 birds have been received in the Rescue Centre with suspected shot wounds since the beginning of the autumn. In many of the cases the hunters shoot on the raptors just for fun.
The Golden eagle received at present is an adult bird, what means that the eagle pair from this Park Section will disappear for good.
As yet another bad coincidence, a wounded bird from the same species was sent to the Rescue Centre of Green Balkans on December 30th last year again with the cooperation of park employees. Unfortunately despite the treatment, that bird didn’t survive.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to Ivan Ivanov and Georgi Stoyanov – park employees from Klisura Park Section, as both of them were on their work places to guard the park despite the holiday.
