On December 1st in the office of GREEN BALKANS – Stara Zagora volunteers have been trained how to analyze the sounds of bats. The training is part of project “Monitoring of bat diversity: Indicators for sustainable development in Eastern Europe”.
The project is original monitoring program developed by The Bat Conservation Trust and Zoological Society of London – United Kingdom. In this program bats are used as indicator species. Their presence is detected with the help of ultrasound detectors and analysis of their sounds allows identification of their species. The monitoring is executed by volunteers with cars equipped with specific equipment that cover defined transects.
Throughout transects the sounds of the bats are being recorded thanks to ultrasound detectors. The sound analysis is a good way to define the species structure of the bats and to find out more about their ecology.
The project will continue also next year for Bulgaria and on global scale it covers Romania, United Kingdom, Croatia, Moldova, Mexico and Hungary.
