20th anniversary of the Habitats Directive and LIFE [ 2012-06-07 ] print Bookmark and Share
The anniversary was celebrated on June 6-7th, in the area of Byala reka, Central Balkan National Park.

The Ministry of Environment and Waters, together with DG Environment of the European Commission organized the celebration in the area of Byala reka, in Central Balkan National Park within the Pan-European initiative for celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Habitats Directive and the LIFE programme.

Here Minister Nona Karadzhova and the Head of DG Environment at EC, Mr. Karl Falkenberg opened the Byala reka Eco-route, renovated within a projected funded by OP Environment.

Among the official guests were also Mrs. Margarita Popova – Vice-president of Bulgaria, Mr. Stefan Leiner – Head of NATURA 2000 Unit at EC and Mrs. Silvia Barova of the EC.

Green Balkans took part, presenting the Vultures Return in Bulgaria LIFE08 NAT/BG/278 Project at an information stand, set up by the organizers. The other projects, funded by the LIFE tool of the EC as well as OPE-funded projects (including ones implemented by Green Balkans) were also presented.

Together with the projects, the colourful stands were overtaken by local producers of lace, rose jam, local dishes and other delicacies, tempting the visitors.

The spirit of the guests was kept high by Elitsa and Stundji, supported by local bag-pipe musicians and singers.

Later that evening the hosts from the Central Balkan NP presented collections of magical pictures of Central Balkan, projected under the stars of the local ancient theater in Hissarya.

The next day the guests took a wonderful walk to the Ray hut and visited the highest waterfall on the Balkans – Rayskoto praskalo, in order to see for themselves the beauties of the Mountains. Some lucky ones even managed to spot a young Brown Bear, the flag species of the Central Balkan NP.

We are very grateful to the kind hosts and the official guests for the wonderful moments we shared!
