[13-11-2020] Fourth graders peered into the hidden World of bats
At the end of October, the Strandzha Nature Park directorate and “St.St. Cyril and Methodius 1985” Community Center - Meden Rudnik district, Burgas, conducted several information campaigns dedicated to the International Bat Night. More than 50 fourth-graders from "Petko Rosen" and "Konstantin Petkanov" schools – Burgas took part in the initiative.

The children peered into the mysterious and enigmatic world of bats with sincere interest. In addition to the attractive presentation about these little-known but very useful mammals the director of "Strandzha" DPP, eng. Rumyana Tsvyatkova, had prepared funny and emotional games about the mysterious world of bats. The fourth-graders also received gifts from the park directorate, Green Balkans and “St.St. Cyril and Methodius 1985” Community Center – Meden Rudnik district – Burgas.

Information and educational materials from Green Balkans were provided as part of the activities of the "Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons" project, as well as by the Secretariat of EUROBATS – the Agreement on the Conservation of European Bats.

Additional information about the International Bat Night:
The initiative to celebrate the event is led by the Secretariat of EUROBATS – the Agreement on the Conservation of European Bat Species. Celebrated for the first time in 1990 in France and Poland, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. In 2012, the United States, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time. With this, the Bat Night became an international event going beyond the borders of the "Old Continent", which aims to introduce people to the unique life and the great importance of one of the most interesting animals on the planet - bats. Western countries usually celebrate the Bat Night on the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation. That is why we are waiting for students to start school and after September 15 the Bat Night information campaign is launched.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
