[14-05-2021] NATURA 2000 Day in Ruse - part of the tour of Green Balkans and friends.
On 10th of May we celebrated the NAURA 2000 Day in Ruse with an information campaign. The first stop of the tour of Green Balkans and friends was the Monument of Liberty in Ruse. The campaign was supported by Rousse Regional Historical Museum and the Municipality of Rousse - Directorate of Ecology and Transport.
The event started in the afternoon with the models of Gosho the Griffon Vulture, the Sandwich Tern, the Lesser Kestrels and the Red-breasted Goose. Children were attracted by them and their parents visited the photo exhibitions of the bats, the Red-breasted Goose and the habitats of NATURA 2000.
Our team held informal lectures about the ecological network and the Green Balkans’ activities for conservation and recovery of the species within NATURA 2000.
All visitors received information materials- book dividers with photos of the protected species, a board game about NATURA 2000, postcards and books with the story of Brent the Red-breasted Goose.
We would like to thank all participants and we hope to visit Ruse again to celebrate important ecological dates with our friends.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Griffon Vulture
Widespread and numerous in the past, at the end of the last century the Griffon Vulture had only 1-2 active nests restricted to the Eastern Rhodopes. Thanks to the efforts of conservation organizations, today the population of the species is growing and we can see it in the Balkan Mountains, Eastern Rhodopes and Kresna. The species and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Sandwich Tern
In Bulgaria, the Sandwich Tern nests only on Pomorie and Atanasovsko lakes. Thanks to years of hard work, today the population of the species in Pomorie Lake is the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. Listed as an endangered species and included in the Birds Directive, the Sandwich Tern and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Lesser Kestrel
The Lesser Kestrel – once extinct as a nesting species in the country and successfully restored 25 years later, thanks to the Green Balkans activities in the Sakar Mountains. The species and its habitats are preserved in the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
