[26-10-2021] The International Bat Night in the village of Cherni Osam
The Bat Night in Cherni Osam was celebrated with children from the village also from the town of Troyan. We from Green Balkans cooperated our actions with The Natural History Museum of Cherni Osam and The National School for Mountain Guides in the village of Cherni Osam.

The Bat Festival passed with studingand practicing techniques for climbing and descending. The youth learned how to climb to the climbing wall and how to descend on trolley over the Cherni Osam River. They received safety instructions and everything that is needed to know when enter and explore caves and bats. Our friends from the National Mountain Guide School in the village of Cherni Osam (the only place of this kind in the country) provided an opportunity for everyone who wanted to be special equipped for the event. Of course everyone who wish to be trained and educated for caves and bats is necessary to take special courses – the most important is not to be afraid of high, sheer and dark places. Children demonstrated exactly the fearless and brave behavior during the activities.
The Night continued with a presentation about the bat species that are found around the world and in our country. We discussed topics, related with that how they help us and why they are so important for people` habitats and what makes them amazing creatures - the only mammals that can performing active flights. There was enough time for art workshops and a quiz with surprises.

We thank the hosts from The Natural History Museum of Cherni Osam and The National School for Mountain Guides in the village of Cherni Osam for the hospitality and warm welcoming. For Green Balkans`team was a real pleasure for to be guests in Cherni Osam. We felt us at home, among so many people who love nature and want to protect it!

More for the initiative:
The EUROBATS Secretariat has the initiative for celebrating the event under the Agreement on  the Conservation of Populations of European Bats.
Celebrated for the first time 25 years ago, today the European Bat Night is organized in more than 30 countries, including Bulgaria. USA, The Philippines, Azerbaijan, Israel, Tunisia, Ukraine and Lebanon joined the event for the first time in 2012. Thus the Bat Night became international, exceeding the scale of the “Old continent”, which aims to introduce more people with the unique way of life and great importance of some of the most interesting animals on the planet – the bats. Usually the western countries celebrate the Bat Night in the last weekend of August, but in Bulgaria we are all still on vacation then J, that’s why we wait for the beginning of school year and we unfold the informational campaign of Bat Night after 15th of September.
Green Balkans are a member of the international organization BatLife Europe, with the support by  KFFOE (Austrian Coordination Centre for Bat Conservation and Research).

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Bats
33 of all 35 bats species in Europe are to be seen in Bulgaria and they are of key importance for the ecosystems. All of them are protected under the Biodiversity Law  and forest and underground habitats of species are protected zones within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
